A systematic study of Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering in air, N₂, and O₂ gases.
Spontaneous Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering experiments in air, N2, and O2 have been performed for a wide range of temperatures and pressures at a wavelength of 403 nm and at a 90° scattering angle. Measurements of the Rayleigh-Brillouin spectral scattering profile were conducted at high signal-to-noise ratio for all three species, yielding high-quality spectra unambiguously showing the small dif...

Coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (CRBS) in krypton at room temperature and moderate pressure has been studied experimentally. The experimental data is in good agreement with the theoretical lineshape developed by the authors. In this paper, we describe the details of the experiment. We also discuss the application of coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering in gas diagnostics.
متن کاملSpontaneous Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering of ultraviolet light in nitrogen, dry air, and moist air.
Atmospheric lidar techniques for the measurement of wind, temperature, and optical properties of aerosols rely on the exact knowledge of the spectral line shape of the scattered laser light on molecules. We report on spontaneous Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering measurements in the ultraviolet at a scattering angle of 90 degrees on N(2) and on dry and moist air. The measured line shapes are compare...
متن کاملCoherent Rayleigh-Brillouin Scattering: Influence of the Intermolecular Potential
The spectrum of the coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (CRBS) of light by a rarefied gas is obtained by solving the Boltzmann equation numerically using the fast spectral method. The influence of the intermolecular potential on the CRBS spectrum is investigated and the accuracy of the prevailing Tenti’s s6 kinetic model is evaluated. Our numerical results show that i) the intermolecular pot...
متن کاملRemote-sensing gas measurements with coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering
We measure the coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (CRBS) signal integral as a function of the recorded gas pressure in He, Co2, SF6, and air, and we confirm the already established quadratic dependence of the signal on the gas density. We propose the use of CRBS as an effective diagnostic for the remote measurement of gas’ density (pressure) and temperature, as well as polarizability, for g...
